About Touraine’s Sauvignon Blanc

Touraine, sometimes called the “Garden of France,” was where kings and nobles built many of the chateaux that make the Loire Valley one of France’s most popular tourist destinations. Sauvignon Blanc most likely originated in Bordeaux, yet it is in the limestone soil of the Centre-Loire, that it shows its best characteristics and qualities.

Although widely planted the world over, and highly successful in such widely different climates as California, New Zealand and Chile, all Sauvignon Blanc aspire to standards set in the Centre-Loire. The climate is too cold for later-ripening grapes (such as the Chenin Blanc) however; Sauvignon Blanc buds late and ripens early, making it ideal for a region prone to severe frosts and harsh winds. In the Loire Valley, Sauvignon Blanc is rarely blended with other grapes, and is responsible for the distinctive characters of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Reuilly, Menetou-Salon, Quincy and Touraine Blanc.

Sauvignon Blanc is almost always dry, yet there is diversity within the refreshing, fruity and almost tart style that predominates these wines. There are few more vivid demonstrations of the ways in which different soils can determine the character of wines made from the same grape, than to taste the great wines of the Centre-Loire side-by-side.

Most Sauvignon Blanc is made for early drinking. With their distinctive aroma – which reminds some people of gooseberries and other of grapefruit – and their fresh, lively acidity, these wines are ideal to drink with the famous goat cheeses of the Loire Valley.  The famous Crottin de Chavignol comes from the same village as some of the best Sancerre. Cold shrimp, lobster and shellfish also make for excellent pairings.

Nonetheless, the high acidity of Sauvignon Blanc means that the wines can be kept, and a few producers have experimented with aging exceptionally ripe vintages in oak. These wines are richer and take longer to show their best qualities. With time, however, they develop a remarkably fragrant complexity that makes them seem almost sweet, better paired with aged cheeses, and even with foie gras, rather than with shellfish.

TasteMakers: Tasting Shapes with Jessup Cellars & Dr. Sondra Barrett http://www.tastelive.com/tastelive_event/events/tastemakers-tasting-shapes-with-jessup-cellars--dr-sondra-barrett Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000

Jessup Cellars will launch its inaugural TasteMaker Speaker Series for 2013 with Tasting Shapes & Peering Into The Molecular Universe of Wine this Friday, April 19th. The interactive thought leadership forums will be staged in the winery’s Tasting Room & Gallery in Napa Valley’s village of Yountville, just a block north of the famed French Laundry. Each event will be integrated with month-long art exhibitions and tasting room activities, bringing together Jessup Cellars wines, food, art and people into fully realized sensory forums. To reach an even greater audience beyond its gallery walls, Jessup Cellars will present live coverage via TasteLive.com. Wine bloggers Thea Dwelle (@WineBratSF), Liza Swift (@BrixChick_Liza), Leilani Cararra (@WineDeviant) and Cailyn McCauley (@CreativeFurnace) will post live from this Friday's forum at TasteLive.com/tastelive_event.

Tasting Shapes & Peering Into The Molecular Universe of Wine

Presented by Author, Biochemist & Photomicrographist, Dr. Sondra Barrett
Moderated by Chef Elizabeth Bender, Bravo’s Top Chef: Seattle Competitor
With Jessup Cellars Winemaker, Rob Lloyd

In association with the Arts Council Napa Valley’s Arts in April celebration, the TasteMaker Series kicks-off on Friday, April 19th with Tasting Shapes & Peering Into The Molecular Universe of Wine featuring the photomicrography of Dr. Sondra Barrett. In her 2009 book, Wine’s Hidden Beauty, Dr. Barrett’s photographs reveal wine’s spirit, personality, and stylistic expression – its inner beauty – and insights into how we experience wine. Guests will be challenged to taste wines and match the varietals pictured to Dr. Barrett’s stunning, molecular art. The evening will feature Jessup Cellars 2011 Carneros Chardonnay ($38), 2010 Napa Zinfandel ($39), 2009 Table for Four ($79), as well as a sneak preview of the upcoming release of its 2011 Carneros Pinot Noir.

Moderated by Chef Elizabeth Binder, former Owner and Executive Chef at Bar Bambino in San Francisco and recent competitor on Bravo’s Top Chef: Seattle, Dr. Barrett will use her photomicrography of wine and the five human tastes to allow the audience to literally peer into the molecular universe of taste. In combination with food reactors, Dr. Barrett, Chef Binder and Jessup Cellars Winemaker Rob Lloyd will connect this molecular landscape through taste and sight to illustrate how food and wine react together. The presentation will be followed by a meet-and-greet, with chill grooves spun by DJ Durojaiye Versatile from his Fermented Sessions album. Dr. Barrett’s photographs will be on display in the gallery throughout the month of April.

Tickets to attend the event are $35 each and can be purchased at www.JessupCellars.com/store

Cafe 140 Celebrates Harvest with Winemakers Patrick Krutz and Dylan Sheldon, with Musical Guest Peter Chung http://www.tastelive.com/cafe_140/events/cafe-140-celebrates-harvest-with-winemakers-patrick-krutz-and-dylan-sheldon-with-musical-guest-peter-chung Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000

Krutz Family Cellars and Sheldon Wines Collaborate with Singer-Songwriter Peter Chung in Celebration of Harvest & New Releases

The October edition of Café 140 goes live on Sunday, October 28 at 1pm PT with winemakers Patrick Krutz of Krutz Family Cellars (@KrutzCellars) and Dylan Sheldon of Sheldon Wines (@SheldonWines). Singer songwriter Peter Chung (@peterchungmusic) will join us for this special Sunday afternoon show celebrating camaraderie, newly released small-lot wines, indie music, and the wrap of harvest 2012.

The interactive Webcast will coincide with Krutz Family Cellars and Sheldon Wines Wine Club Harvest Pick Up Parties that runs from 12:05 to 5:05pm PT at their shared tasting room and production facilities in Santa Rosa, California. The afternoon will feature good eats, new releases, live music by Peter Chung, pumpkin decoration, prizes for best Halloween costume, and discounts on featured wines.

We’ll also showcase the songs of Peter Chung. Peter is full-time musician in the San Francisco Bay Area who is pursuing his dream to become a world-famous singer/songwriter. As Peter says, “I believe songs are more than catchy melodies; I believe songs are messages. I believe in making songs that stir up strong emotions…”

When growing up, Peter was surrounded by music. His mother played piano, his father played guitar and both sang in the church choir. In his early years, Peter learned to play piano, trumpet and drums. However, it was guitar that finally fed his appetite for songwriting (melody and lyrics) and the spotlight.

TasteLive is looking forward to hearing and sharing Peter’s story through his songs, while we sip delicious wines created by winemakers Patrick Krutz and Dylan Sheldon!

The charismatic John Geber, already a fine wine enthusiast, happened upon the majestic Chateau in 1998 on an early morning bike ride. Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Tasting & Webcast http://www.tastelive.com/tastelive_event/events/gran-reserva-serie-riberas-tasting--webcast Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 Gran Reserva Serie Riberas: A Family of Single-Vineyard, Estate Wines, Influenced by Chile’s Major Rivers

TasteLive's interactive Webcast tasting celebrating the introduction of Gran Reserva Serie Riberas, Concha y Toro’s newest single-vineyard estate wines from Chile, goes live on October 17, 2012 at 6:00pm Pacific Time. These wines are influenced by Chile’s major rivers, and sourced from or near the banks of the Rapel, Cachapoal, Tinguiririca and Maule, where the valleys formed by these rivers allow ocean breezes and cold mountain winds to penetrate the warm, sunny interior of the Chilean landscape.

The winemaking team Gran Reserva Serie Riberas comprises three exceptional and long serving Viña Concha y Toro enologists, who have increasingly concentrated on specific varieties. Marcio Ramírez makes the Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Malbec, Héctor Urzúa the Merlot, and Mario Miranda, the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Winemaker Marcio Ramírez will be our featured winemaker to present four wines from the portfolio with our wine blogger panelists from across the United States. The wines include the Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, Gran Reserva Carmenere, Gran Reserva Malbec, and Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Long-Term Vision of Gran Reserva Serie Riberas

Aside from the powerful images of vast and tumbling rivers created by the melting snows of the Andes, and terraced vineyards sculpted along undulating hills and river gorges, what really has us intrigued by the Gran Reserva Serie Riberas portfolio is Concha y Toro’s long-term vision for sustainability and dealing with global climate change. To delve deeper, CLICK HERE to read our blog feature and view the visually stunning Gran Reserva Serie Riberas video.

Below, we have included links to the featured Gran Reserva Serie Riberas wine technical sheets, as well as a collection of recipe pairings for each wine. We invite you to click the RSVP button at the bottom of this page and join our conversation. Our featured wine blogger panelists will be named in the coming days…

Rodney Strong, Rosso & Rootstock with Midori Live http://www.tastelive.com/cafe_140/events/rodneystrongrossorootstockwithmidorilive1234 Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000

Cafe 140's July show, hosted by Joel Quigley of TasteLive, will tease the upcoming Rootstock Festival (Saturday, July 21 from 2pm to 6pm) with a sampling of the day's players during our live webcast from Heritage Public House. Rodney Strong Vineyards, represented by Director of Communications Robert Larsen, will pair four wines with dishes created by Chef John Francetti of Rosso Pizzeria & Wine Bar. To add a little rockn 'n' roll spice to the show, Midori of Mirdori & Ezra Boy is the evening's guest musical artist. The webcast goes live from 6pm to 7pm PT on Wednesday, July 18th. Click here to RSVP!

Click here to download all four wine pairing recipes!

So how does this all thread together to tease Rootstock? First of all, Rodney Strong Vineyards has had a long and passionate love affair with music. This year is the winery's 22nd Annual Summer Concert Series in the Russian River Valley. We're honored that they're extending their reach into music by supporting Rootstock. As for Chef John Franchetti, he'll be competing in Rootstock's "Best Bites" competition with his China Box slow roasted suckling pig. And last, but not least, Mirdori & Ezra Boy are playing the Rootstock after party at Heritage Public House beginning at 6pm. A tight little bow, hey?

Savor the Summer with Archery Summit http://www.tastelive.com/crimsonwinegroup/events/savor-the-summer-with-archery-summit Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 Join Winemaker Anna Matzinger and Winegrower Leigh Bartholomew as they taste through and discuss three new releases for the summer from the Willamette Valley's Archery Summit.

    2011 Vireton Rosé

    Vireton

Our latest vintage of Vireton Rosé, named for the curving feather on an archer’s arrow, is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown on our five estate vineyards. Essentially the earliest beginnings of our single vineyard wines, it is produced in the saignée method—literally, “to bleed”—by bleeding off a portion of wine after only a short period of contact of the juice with the grape skins. Enjoy the beautiful simplicity of this creamy yet bright wine that was created only to deliciously please the palate and the senses.

    2010 Premier Cuvée Pinot Noir

    Premier Cuvée

Our Premier Cuvée captures the holistic essence of our five estate vineyards, combining fruit from across our nearly 120 acres in the Dundee Hills and Ribbon Ridge AVAs. Always full of complexity achieved by the melding of different vineyard characteristics, our 2010 vintage is especially luscious. The abundant mouthfeel and rich fruit characters are beautifully complemented by an acidity that maintains elegance and balance through the long finish, delivering a deliciously classic Pinot Noir.

    2010 Arcus Estate Pinot Noir

    Arcus

Arcus, meaning “bow” in Latin, describes our estate vineyard that wraps around both sides of a small valley in the heart of the Dundee Hills.  Capturing the distinctive terroir of this single vineyard, the 2010 Arcus Estate rewards Pinot Noir devotees with an expansive nose, compelling mid-palate, elegant finish and a superior expression of true Pinot Noir.

Drink Alsace - Wines of Pure Expression http://www.tastelive.com/tastelive_event/events/drink-alsace--wines-of-pure-expression Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 Wines of Alsace, Binny’s & TasteLive Team Up for Drink Alsace: Wines of Pure Expression

Wines of Alsace, Binny’s Beverage Depot & TasteLive are teaming up for Drink Alsace: Wines of Pure Expression on June 28th and June 30th. TasteLive will kick off the festivities on Thursday, June 28th from 4pm to 7pm CT with an Open Forum discussion from 4pm to 6pm and an interactive comprehensive tasting from 6pm to 7pm, all lead by Patrick W Fegan, Director of Chicago Wine School and Wine Columnist for Examiner.com. A panel of regional and national wine and food bloggers will join Patrick from 6pm to 7pm for the comprehensive tasting. Patrick will share his insights about Alsace wines and the region, and field questions posted by guests and panelists throughout the event.

To join the conversation, scroll down to RVSP below. Wines of Alsace’s Twitter hashtag is #alsacechat with the handle @drinkAlsace. You can also join Wines of Alsace on Facebook page at Wines of Alsace USA.

    In-Store Tastings @ Binny’s Beverage Depot
The TasteLive interactive tasting is a precursor to Binny’s Beverage Depot storewide complimentary tasting of Alsatian wines at all 28 locations throughout Illinois on Saturday, June 30th from 1pm to 4pm. Along with the tasting, wines will be available for purchase at special prices.

    Alsace Wines According to Binny’s
Alsace is one of France’s top white wine regions and is famous for its fresh, aromatic and food-friendly wines. Located on the eastern border of Germany in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, Alsace produces terroir-driven wines of pure fruit expressions from 7 main grape varieties. Unlike other regions in France, the wines of Alsace typically indicate the grape variety on their labels: for example, Alsace Pinot Blanc and Alsace Riesling. When a grape appears on a label, the wines are comprised 100% of that variety. The region also makes high-quality, reasonably priced sparkling wines called Crémant d’Alsace.

Raise your glass to summer!  Join us as we taste three light, refreshing and delicious summer varietals that just hit the shelves at Fresh & Easy.  Our wine expert, Richard Wherry, will lead the conversation while offering great wine tips and food parings.

    Wines to taste:

    Charonge – Under $10

A wonderful marriage between Chardonnay and orange, this wine has a blissfully citrus flavor profile, a perfect complement to any summertime white fish dishes and salads.  Best served chilled.

I heart CA Red Blend - Under $5

This fruity red blend has aromas of cherries and plums, with flavors of blackberry jam and a hint of toasted oak.  Serve at room temperature and enjoy with a barbecued ribeye steak or your favorite pasta dish.

Big Kahuna Sangria - Under $5

Our sangria is a refreshing blend of ripe citrus fruits and juicy red wine.  Add sliced oranges, strawberries, or melon and serve cold over ice.

Chamisal Vineyards presents a Toast to Summer http://www.tastelive.com/crimsonwinegroup/events/chamisal-vineyards-presents-a-toast-to-summer Thu, 01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 +0000 Taste along with winemaker Fintan du Fresne and assistant winemaker Mike Bruzus and learn about four new releases for the summer from the Edna Valley's Chamisal Vineyards.

    2011 Stainless Chardonnay

No oak is used in crafting this wine, showcasing the essence of Central Coast Chardonnay. Crisp and clean, it captures the pure pineapple, juicy citrus and guava fruit that makes this noble varietal so popular.

    2010 Estate Chardonnay

Round and rich, this single-vineyard Chardonnay bursts with citrus and tropical fruit, hints of vanilla and butterscotch lent by French oak and notes of wild fennel and nutmeg contributed by the signature “Chamisal Spice.”

    2010 Estate Pinot Noir

Our latest bottling is big and bold with rich black cherry and dark berry fruit with a unique “Chamisal Spice” character showing in notes of tangerine zest and savory nutmeg.

    2009 Grenache

Our small block of Grenache consists of two complementary clones. This vintage, 60% of the blend is comprised of the Noir clone, for its light berry and floral influence. The other 40% consists of the Alban clone, contributing darker fruit characters, structure and density.
